This is the last post in the Why I Don’t Series :(. This time, I’m talking about why I don’t listen to pop/mainstream music.
Story time!! A few years ago, I totally loved One Direction. My sister and I were obsessed!
Looking back, I feel kind of bad about my music choices to be honest. I go back and listen to the 1D songs that I just loved so much, and they are practically worshipping girls. I honestly don’t know how I didn’t feel bad just listening to that music!
If you think about it, this is what most mainstream music is like.
Just like mainstream movies and Halloween, they put our focus on the wrong things. There are many love songs these days that I think could be sung to Jesus – words such as “I need you”, “When we’re together, everything is ok and right”, that sort of thing.
That said, here are a few reasons I don’t listen to mainstream music anymore.
- They glorify people and things
As I said already, love songs glorify people. Or, some songs glorify things and what we want. There’s one song that says “give it to me I’m worth it”. They’re glorifying themselves. Whether other people, ourselves, or worldly things, mainstream music puts our focus where it doesn’t need to be. As used in my last two posts Colossians 3:2 says: Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
- They talk about impure things
Lots of pop songs have bad language, talk about kissing people, and the like. Would the Lord want us listening to and singing to this? No, we’re supposed to be pure. Matthew 5:8 says: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
- They are selfish
I know that’s a short reason, but think about it. Mainstream music is all about ME ME ME. It’s not about the Lord, but about what WE need, how WE are great just the way we are, how WE need a guy/girl, etc. Again, they have our focus on the wrong things.
Make sure you filter what you listen to through the Word of God. Would it give honor and glory to Him? Is it filling your mind with pure things?
In conclusion to this series, I hope that you were encouraged by this. We may be seen as weird or different because we don’t do things, but we are called to be reviled, rather, it’s part of being a Christian.
Also here are a few great Christian singers:
