The Light Shines in the Darkness

Many of us are fearing the days to come, because of the election. Even though I’m too young to vote, I wanted to share with all of ya’ll some verses that God has used to comfort me in times of trouble.

First off, remember that no matter who becomes president, Jesus is King.

We may hear this all the time, off and on, but it is a timeless truth. Even if our country is in the hands of a bad person, our world is in the hands of an awesome God. Why fear when He is all we need? It’s that simple. Why let fear overtake and consume us, when that does nothing but destroy?

John 1:5 says: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

My friend once put it this way: what happens when you walk into a dark room with a flashlight? Is the room still dark? NO! It’s completely lit up by the flashlight.

This is like John 1:5. Nothing can ever overcome the light. Why fear the dark when the light is stronger?

Next I want to remind you to look to Jesus first for all your needs.

When you feel tempted to worry and stress over anything (especially the election and the future of our country) come to Jesus and cast your cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7) for He loves to hear from you. There is a line in the song ‘Your Love is Strong’ by Jon Foreman that says:

So why should I worry? Why do I freak out, God is what I need. You know what I need.

It’s so much simpler than we think. When we live in surrender to Christ, He knows just what He is doing with our lives. He knows all that we need, and when He holds our lives, why do we need to worry? Why do we need to fear? As I said before, if the light is stronger than the darkness, why do we dwell on and fear the dark?

I want to also encourage you to pray for our nation. Pray for our current president, our upcoming one, and all the votes of people around the world. Prayers do so matter. Even if you are too young to vote, like me, you can still pray.

Lastly, I want to leave you all with Psalm 121:

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;

 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.

Remember that no matter what happens, God is still King and His light will always overcome the darkness. He is truly all you need. Set your eyes on Him not on the world around you, for He is constant even when the world isn’t.

  1. Thanks for posting that! When is the election? I’m Australian but even over here people are ‘worrying’ over who’ll be the president of America. You phrased it so perfectly!
