So a couple weeks ago I asked my followers on Instagram their opinion on this question: Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People? I got so many amazing responses so thank you guys so so much! Here are their amazing answers and then I’ll share mine…
“I think God has a plan for a person’s life regardless of whether they’re good or bad. God has a plan for your life no matter how good you are. I mean, look at Jesus, the best person to ever walk on the earth, and yet God let Him have such a terrible experience.”
“Well, I don’t believe there really are GOOD people. We’re all sinners, no one is perfect or “good”. So bad things are happening to “good” people, bad things happen to bad people. No matter how good they think they are. And the bad things only happen to people because sin has entered the world. If sin wasn’t a part of this world we would be good people and sin would not exist.”
“Bad things happen because there are no good people. We are all sinners.”
“Lots of times “bad” things happen to “good” people because good [Christian] people aren’t willing to sacrifice their morals to do sinful things which often leaves them the subject of ridicule. [side note from me, in the Bible it tells us that Jesus was reviled for living righteously and if we live like Him, won’t that happen to us as well?]
But Biblically, it should be : why do good things happen to bad people? We are all sinners and we deserve nothing but hell and eternal torture. But God blesses us all the time (especially with the gift of salvation from death, like wow) even though we are such sinners (to say the least), we constantly have good things happen to us, even if they seem small.”
“There are no “good” people, only God is good. He gives everyone free will, and some choose evil.”
“Romans 8:28 ~ And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
I think that no one is an actual “good person”. There’s simply no such thing other than Jesus. But there are those really devoted Christians. They aren’t good people, but they are as close as any of us can get before heaven. Bad things are really just a viewpoint. If you have a joyful Christlike mindset, these are just trials to help you become closer to God. So why do trials happen to devoted Christians? To bring us closer to God and realize that we need Him to lean on.”
“I think bad things happen to good people so that they learn.”
“I’d have to say that God uses trials to test and strengthen His people’s faith. That being said, when bad things happen to ‘good people’ who aren’t God’s children, I believe that God is often trying to call those people to Him. Of course, none of us can fully know God’s plans.”
“I believe bad things happen to good people because sin is in the world and there’s nothing we can do about it. We all mess up sometimes, and we all consider ourselves “good” to an extent. Good people are not free from bad things happening to them because that’s how the world works. However, because of bad things happening, we can learn from them and our faith can be strengthened from it.”
Aren’t those answers all amazing? I think it’s so amazing to see different people’s mindsets on a certain matter. Here is my answer, boiled down a bit:
Bad things happen to us because we live in a sinful world. Life isn’t supposed to be easy. Never in the Bible does God say that, all He says is that He’s with us through it all and working it to our good.
Also, none of us are really good people. We may be devoted Christians, but we can never attain holiness. If we are striving to live for Jesus, bad things WILL HAPPEN TO US. 1 Peter 1 talks about Jesus being ridiculed as a living stone, rejected by men yet chosen by God. This is us. If we live for and like Jesus, we will be ridiculed. We may even be killed. At that point we have to ask ourselves this question: is Jesus worth it? Worth it all? Worth my life? We need know that bad things happen to “good” aka Godly people because we look like Jesus. We can take hope in the fact that we are going through what Jesus went through! Isn’t that kind of cool?
