Love Defined Book Review

I had the amazing privilege of being accepted into the Love Defined Launch Team, run by Kristen Clark and Bethany Baird, founders of Girl Defined ministries. I was so blessed to be a part of this group!

Today I wanted to share my thoughts on this book with you all. Let’s get into the review, shall we?

~ Summary ~

“Our culture is obsessed with love and romance–so why are so few women experiencing satisfying, long-term love?

“In this insightful and encouraging book, sisters Kristen Clark and Bethany Baird help single women of all ages discover a radically better approach to navigating their love lives. Covering topics such as true love, romance, purposeful relationships, purity, boundaries, singleness, and glorifying God in every stage of our relationships, Love Defined unpacks God’s original design for romance, showing modern women how to experience God’s best for them in their relationships. Full of biblical truths and step-by-step application of concepts discussed, the book also includes a chapter-by-chapter study guide to be used individually or in small groups, as well as four letters from godly women who have been married for 30, 40, and 50+ years, offering priceless, hard-won advice to single women.”

The book starts off by describing what the world tells us “love” is. They explain how the love of this world is always changing, and is never secure, because it is based on a foundation of feelings.

They compared modern romance to a spinny ride at an amusement park:

“When the two of us look at our culture’s method for modern romance, we see a lot of parallels between it and the crazy spinning ride. From the outside, everything looks fun and exciting. The lights are bright, the laughter is loud, and the screams are abundant. Everyone (well, almost everyone) is spinning around, having the time of their life. And then the ride stops. The nauseated passengers stumble toward the exit wondering if the ride was worth it.” – Love Defined, page 36 of chapter 3, “The Merry-Go-Round Method for Modern Relationships”

Next, the girls go into what God-defined love is, and describe it based on Biblical Truths. They encourage us that true love is sacrifice, and that our first love must be Christ. Here is a great quote from that section of the book:

“God-defined love is built not on a foundation of self but rather on a foundation of self-sacrifice.” – Love Defined, page 68 of chapter 5, “Getting Back to the Heart of Love, Marriage, and Sex”

One of my favorite parts of the book was the section where Kristen and Bethany give super practical ways to apply this kind of love into our daily lives. I love how these girls break down Truth and make it so practical and help us see how to actually live out what we learn.

Overall, this book was a great read! Kristen and Bethany write in such a fun and personal way, but they do not beat around the bush or water down Truth. They give you Truths from God’s Word, and how to live them out.

All of the points made in this book are Biblically-based, and this entire book is chock-full of Bible verses, which I greatly appreciate. Kristen and Bethany take God at His Word, dig deep into what He is saying, and strive to live that out. They looked to God’s Word for what love means, and then wrote this book on it, and I’m glad they did.

The only downfall to this book is that it is primarily for single women. If you are married, I most likely wouldn’t suggest this book to you. However, I would definitely recommend it to all single women. This is a message that is so needed in our world these days.

We have all seen the downfalls of romance in our world today- whether it was a relationship we were in, or someone we knew. Kristen and Bethany present a radically and refreshingly different approach to love that WORKS. It’s not based on feelings, but on God and that is what makes this book so amazing.
