I LOVE Anne of Green Gables, thanks to a friend of mine who told me about the movies a year or so ago. 😉 I fell in love with the movies and am currently reading book 4 in the series.
Last year, Netflix started a show called “Anne with an E.” It’s a very modernized version of Anne of Green Gables, and they made numerous alterations to the books and original story.
Despite these changes, I really enjoyed the first season – the actors were all spectacular, the was setting GORGEOUS, and the filming was amazing. And can I just say, GILBERT! If you know anything about AoGG, enough said. 😉 There were a couple questionable things in 2 of the episodes that made me uncomfortable, but I decided that I would try out the second season, and if these kind of things continued, I would stop watching the show.
I was disappointed after watching most of the second season. Let me just say, I don’t mind how the show strays from the story-line, it doesn’t particularly bother me. However, when they do things that are against God’s Word, along with some things that were not-so-great in the first season, I simply cannot keep watching/supporting the show. In season 2, they did something that I do not support in any way.
One of the characters is homosexual. Well, he has desires to be, and likes guys, and they support him. Anne believes that love looks different for everyone and whatever kind of love you have, whether you are straight or gay, that should be supported. She even talks about this in one episode.
You might be thinking, okay, it’s just one character, and you can fast forward through any scenes that aren’t good. However, I don’t think I’m going to continue watching this show unless things improve.
Ephesians 5:3-4 says: But sexual immorality, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be mentioned among you, as becomes saints; nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not appropriate; but rather giving of thanks. (emphasis added)
I thought about continuing to watch the show, but I honestly didn’t even really enjoy the second season much anyways. Plus, God’s Word says to not even mention sexual immorality among you. This means that we shouldn’t watch it, speak of it, think about it, or do it. “Anne with an E” obviously supports gay people and homosexuality, and God’s Word doesn’t.
Let me make this clear: I love gay and homosexual people, and I believe God does too. He sent Jesus to save ALL people, not just the straight people. John 3:16 says: For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
I don’t, however, support their sin. It’s wrong according to God’s Word. (For more on God’s design for romantic relationships, check out this post) I can’t watch Anne with an E the same way knowing that there’s a character on there who is homosexual. It’s against God’s Word, and even if there’s just a hint of it in this show, I know it’s something I shouldn’t watch.
I encourage you to be careful what you are watching and allowing into your mind. I know that there are some really great shows and movies out there that have homosexuality in them, and I want to encourage you to chose to refrain from watching those shows. God calls His people to be holy and pure, and not participating in, agreeing with, or thinking about sin. Even if you go through those scenes of sexual immorality, whether it be with a man and a woman or with people of the same sex, is it worth it? You shouldn’t have to compromise your morals for entertainment.
You are called to be set-apart and holy, so I encourage you to think before you watch.
1 Peter 1:13-16 // Therefore prepare your minds for action, be sober, and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ— as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance, but just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy; for I am holy.”
Romans 12:1-2 // Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Philippians 4:8 // Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.
Matthew 7:13-14 // “Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it. How narrow is the gate, and restricted is the way that leads to life! Few are those who find it.
