Purity is such an important topic. It’s a word that we as Christians likely hear a lot about, but what does it really mean?
Starting today, I’ll be doing a blog series on purity, and the various ways that we, as young women, can walk in it. Today’s post is going to be all about your mind, where purity starts. Let’s dive into today’s post!
Our minds can be a dangerous place. Once a thought goes into them, it can expand and become something much more, oftentimes something much worse.
I believe purity starts in the mind. We act and live based on our thoughts. If we put trash in, trash will come out. On the other hand, if you put good things in, good will come out. I want to share 3 specific and practical tips with you for keeping your mind pure and overcoming impure thoughts.
1. Spend Time Every Day With God
Making time to spend in God’s Word and in prayer daily is so important! It helps us grow in our relationship with God, know Him and His Word more, and focus on the right things.
I encourage you to set aside time each day when you’ll be able to spend devotional time with God. Study His Word, spend time praying over needs in your life and others lives, and be devoted to growing in Him. Meditate on and memorize His Word. Fill your mind with the TRUTH, then you’ll be better equipped to fight the lies.
Romans 8:5-6 // For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace; (emphasis mine)
2. Don’t Look at Porn
Pornography is a huge thing these days; so many people are caught in a mindless cycle of looking at horribly inappropriate images on the Internet.
If you struggle with a porn addiction, know that there is freedom for you. Come to God about it, and ask Him to help you have true remorse for your sin. Repent, asking for God’s strength to walk in victory from this. TURN from looking at these images and videos. Walk away and make a firm decision not to come back.

3. Only Watch/Listen/Read Things that are Honoring to God
Even if you’re not a porn addict or have never looked at those kind of images, there are still many harmful things you can put into your head. It can be tough to walk in purity and not lust after guys when we are always listening to love songs, reading romance novels, and watching romantic movies. I’m not saying that all things that put ideas of love into our heads are wrong; what I’m saying is we must be careful.
We must be careful what goes into our mind. Is it edifying us? Is it pushing us closer to, or farther away from Christ? Paul gives us a list of things to think about in Philippians 4:
Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8, emphasis mine)
Evaluate what you watch and what you listen to through this verse. Are the movies I watch pure and honorable & just? Are the songs I listen to virtuous and honoring to the Lord? Replace things that don’t honor God with things that do – listen to praise music, read good Christian books and fiction that is pure, watch decent movies. Be intentional to watch/read/listen to good entertainment, and refrain from the not-so-good stuff. It might not be easy, but it’s undoubtedly worth it.
Make Psalm 51:10 the prayer and cry of your heart: “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.” (emphasis mine) Purity starts in our minds. How will you fill your mind with truth today?
Are there any TV shows, movies, songs, singers, or books you need to give up to maintain a pure mind and lifestyle?
